Sedation Dentistry
Explore Our Sedation Dentistry Options
As a sedation dentist, Dr. Theodorou knows many people are uncomfortable or afraid when confronted with the prospect of visiting the dentist. Whether your anxiety is due to a previous bad experience, fear of needles, a sensitive gag reflex, or difficulty becoming numb by traditional methods, Dr. Theodorou always treats it as a legitimate concern and will address your situation with care and understanding. Our sedation dentistry options make it possible for you to experience a completely soothing dental visit, even if you need extensive dental work completed. You can undergo your planned treatment while relaxed and comfortable in the dental chair, with little to no memory of your appointment by the following day.
Is Sedation Dentistry for Me?
If you have any kind of dental anxiety, sedation dentistry was made for you. We use a couple of different techniques to ensure our patients get the most out of their appointment. Be sure to consider sedation if any of the following apply to you:
- You’re anxious or nervous about your appointment
- You have a low tolerance for discomfort
- A strong gag reflex makes dental care difficult
- You have a hard time sitting for long periods of time
Relax With Laughing Gas
The most commonly used sedative method, laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask. Minutes after you begin breathing in the gas, you will feel more relaxed. The effects of laughing gas will fade quickly after your treatment, and you will be able to drive yourself home from the appointment without impairment. Laughing gas is professionally known as nitrous oxide and is known to alleviate some fear of the dentist.
Learn More About Oral Sedation
Dr. Theodorou is certified to provide safe and effective sedative pills that you will take about an hour before your visit. By the time you arrive for your scheduled appointment, you may begin to feel some of the early effects of the sedation. Based on your comfort level, the dentist will administer more medication to make you relaxed and comfortable. While patients may not remember much from their time at the office, they are not unconscious during treatment, just in a deeply relaxed and detached state. Based on an evaluation of your individual needs, your dentist may administer a combination of laughing gas and oral medication. Because the sedation effects will last for a few hours after your treatment, a trusted friend or family member will need to accompany you home. Let our pain-free dentist know if you have any questions about sedative pills or gentle dentistry.
